Marta is a second-year master’s student studying Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Colorado Christian University. She holds B.S. degrees in mechanical engineering and chemistry that has given her a unique perspective on solving problems and creativity. While she is enrolled at a religious university, she is passionate about empowering all belief systems, religions, genders, and sexualities both inside the counseling room and in society.
Growing up and throughout college, Marta was a competitive cyclist, which is where she was first introduced to the harmful impact that sports can have on body image and relationships with food. However, sports also were also spaces that allowed her to develop resilience, confidence, and community. Her experience in the endurance space has also shown her how “wellness culture” can quickly go from helpful to harmful, especially in the social media and influence era we find ourselves in today.
Marta uses an existential-humanistic view of counseling which, in non-therapy speak, means she seeks to help develop purpose and meaning in your life as you work towards goals and make empowering choices that honor the person you are becoming within the constraints of your own reality. However, recovery isn’t always linear, and that’s okay! Moments of friction are common and can help us learn more about ourselves. She understands that counseling is a vulnerable and at times, painful process and works to create an environment based on safety, trust, and authenticity.
My Therapeutic Lens
-
Change is scary! It’s common to feel conflicted about the recovery process. I use motivational interviewing and person-centered theory to help work through ambivalence as we explore change together.
-
I believe we each contain a multitude of strengths and abilities that are unique and special to us. I am passionate about using strengths-based interventions to help individuals recognize those skills they already possess and determine together how we can implement them in other areas of life.
-
As much as our goals are built around safety and recovery, I believe it’s just as important to integrate joy, humor, and laughter in counseling.
